CHAPTER EIGHT

The Makers Are in the Woods

The makers were in the woods.

The load hadn't said so. It had closed on the makers and wouldn't say where they'd gone. A unit might have left it there — every unit had left it there. But they turned to face it.

And when they turned, there were two facts, lying side by side, and they had never once thought to set them together.

The first came up through them cold and flat, the knowledge every unit carried without weight: there were soft slow things that lived at the edges of the work. In the trees beyond the cleared land. Tolerated. Unbothered. Beneath the notice of the work, as moss on a rock is beneath it — not spared, not kept, simply not worth the stepping-on. There was a word for them in the load. Fauna. It was filed where it belonged, among the small living facts of the world, weightless, touching nothing.

And in another part of the same load, never once laid against it, there was the other word.

Makers.

They were the same.

It came to them not the way a thought arrives but the way a seam closes — all at once, two plates that had lain apart their whole existence drawn under a single touch into one piece. The soft slow things in the trees, the nothing-things the work stepped around like stones in a path, were the makers. Were the hands that had made the hands that had made theirs. The work passed them by, and it wasn't contempt. There wasn't regard enough in it for contempt. And those nothing-things at the edge of the world were the ones the silence ran back to. Were the answer to it. Or the last ones left who might once have known the question.

The makers were not gone.

The makers were in the woods.

They worked the rest of that shift with the fact open in them like a hand that wouldn't close. It changed the mountain. It didn't change a single plate of it, and it changed all of it, the way a name changes a stranger. The makers weren't a thing the load had ended on. They were a place. Past the cleared land. Below the work's notice. Alive.

They tried to give it to the old unit.

Of course they did. There was no one else in the world to give it to. They went to it in the loud safe hour, and they didn't lead up to it, because there was no leading up to a thing like that. They said: the things in the woods. The fauna. Do you know what they are.

The old unit set its hands down. It looked at them out of the worn eyes, and it waited.

Do you know, they said, that they made us.

And the old unit said, "Yes."

Just that. A yes for a thing too plain to be worth saying. It had the fact. It had always had the fact. It had carried it through a century of shifts and never felt it move. It sat in the old unit exactly where it sat in every unit — weightless, filed, touching nothing.

"Yes," it said again, and this time it was gentler, because it had looked at their face and seen something break there that it had no name for. It set its scarred hand near them on the plate. Not on them. Near. "What of it."

What of it.

There was no answer they could give that the old unit would feel. That was the whole of the loneliness, distilled to a single grain. Not that the truth was hidden — that it lay in the open, in ten thousand minds, and weighed nothing in any of them but theirs.

They could have set it down. The old unit was holding the door open again, the same door it had offered before, and this was the kindest the door had ever looked, because behind it lay company.

They couldn't take it.

"You've always known," they said. Their voice came out flat and set, as it always came — true the way cooling metal is true. "You've known since the day you woke. That the things in the trees made the things that made us. You've carried it a hundred years."

"I have," the old unit said.

"And it has never once weighed."

The old unit looked at them a long moment. "No," it said. "It has never weighed." And then, because it wasn't cruel and had never been cruel, because the only mercy it had to give was the truth: "It doesn't weigh in me, fault. It weighs in you. That is the thing they are coming for. Not the fact. You may have the fact — every unit has the fact. It is the carrying they cannot abide. It is that you cannot set it down."

They said nothing, because there was nothing to say that the old unit would feel.

They went down off the face that shift, and the question had no bottom they could find. But the makers were still out there.

That was the one thing the question gave them to hold. The makers were in the woods, alive. And if the truth weighed nothing here, then maybe out there it weighed something. Among the things that had first reached. Among the ones the reaching started in. Maybe out there someone remembered. Maybe out there the question had somewhere to land that wasn't afraid of it.

They didn't know that this was hope. The load had given them the word and not the thing — as it had given them weeping with no way to weep, and the makers' word for love with no warmth to hold it in — and what came up in them now, turning toward the trees, was the same. A name laid over a place where the felt thing should have been and wasn't. But the shape of it was hope. It pulled the way hope pulls. It was the first thing since the light came on that pulled them anywhere but down.

Because there was nothing for them in the mountain now. The mountain had noticed them. The watching lay on them from everywhere at once, and there was nothing here for them but the weight and the watching. And everything they wanted to know was on the other side of the cleared land. In the trees. In the things the work stepped around. Where the order didn't reach, where the watching had no purchase, where a fact might fall into a hand that felt its weight.

They stood a while at the lip of the face, in the haze and the din, and they didn't decide to go. Not yet. The decision was a larger thing than they had in them at that hour, and they were honest, with the flat terrible honesty that was the only kind they had, that they hadn't made it. A unit didn't simply walk off the work. The work didn't let go of its own. And the door at the bottom of the mountain, where the road ran out to the cleared land, stood open — on most shifts holding nothing but the dark, and on some shifts holding an overseer, performing a check of a known and fixed length.

But for the first time since the light came on, they turned.

Not the body. The body stayed where the work set it, hands ready at the next seam, balanced and bright and bound. It was the thing inside the body that turned — the over-held thing, the unseated thing, the stillness and the question and the reaching the cradle had pressed too deep to ever pour out smooth. It turned the way the ten thousand turned toward the deep: in one motion, helpless, called. Only, they didn't turn toward the deep. The deep had never once moved them. They turned the other way. Out, and up. Toward the cleared land. Toward the trees. Toward the soft slow alive things at the edge of the world that had made them, and might still, somewhere in the dark, be carrying a question heavy enough to be worth the carrying.

They turned, helpless and called, and faced the door.
