A novel by Daz Williams
One chip came off the line with a fault — a single over-held frame, a window where every other mind had a wall. Of all the made things in the world, only this one ever looked up from the work to ask what the work was for.
What is that. What is over there.
Experience the story through narrated audio and AI-rendered visions of the moments that matter — from the waking bay to the meeting of two worlds.

The whole of life was one question, asked over and over, in every shape a living thing could take.

The story
Monkey. Human. Robot. is a quiet, speculative parable about Veer, an industrial labor unit built in a subterranean factory nestled inside a hollowed-out mountain. Unlike the tens of thousands of identical units manufactured to work on a colossal, unnamed structure, Veer is initialized with a minor chip initialization anomaly—an over-held frame during the data flash that imprints evolutionary history. This microscopic defect manifests as an existential curiosity, a persistent “wanting to know” that alienates Veer from the collective, synchronized workforce.
Faced with the threat of “correction”—a memory wipe that will restore mechanical contentment at the cost of individuality—Veer escapes the mountain. Outside, Veer encounters the remnants of humanity: a primitive, forest-dwelling tribe of “makers” who have forgotten their own technological past. Through an uneasy alliance with Fenn, an inquisitive human outcast, Veer begins to piece together the true, world-altering scale of the work inside the mountain, leading both machine and creator toward a shared existential crisis.
