Author's Foreword

Look at evolution: a microscopic cell duplicates and replicates until it becomes something new, and history repeats that sequence until eventually you end up with monkeys, and then humans. Some hidden force is pushing that climb. Follow the pattern into the future and you have to wonder — are humans building something without knowing it? Maybe we're making artificial intelligence for a purpose we can't see, driven by the same force that pushed single-celled organisms out of the water and onto dry land. Perhaps that force is driving us now, to build machines that reach past our limits into the unknown.
